Just when things were going so right
and I knew exactly what I wanted to do
why did I have to meet you that night
and then come to fall in love with you?
God, what am I supposed to do?

Could there be some purpose rare,
a reason for that special meeting,
a design for what we've come to share?
Or is it just the flash of a firefly fleeting
into the darkness of night?

Is this confusion the pulling of strings
by a trickster god who, seated above,
watches gleefully as his mischief brings
misery to those who think they're in love?
Or could it be something more?

Perhaps its the birthpains of a tiny seed
struggling upward through the clutches of unforgiving soil,
striving to burst through the tangle of weed
to find light in the sun as reward for its toil -
transformed by its effort into something beautiful.

In this cold hard world we live in,
is true love worth the pain?
Will dreams we chase force us to give in
or can we come together again
to a love stronger than ever before?

Just know that I gave you all of me,
all my past and my present that night.
Our futures are pages unwritten and free;
I pray that together we come to write
our chapters in the novel of life.

In a world of fortunes lost and scarred hearts torn,
where sorrow and pain are a part of the plan,
I'll have you as my rose in the garden of thorns
and, though pressed on all sides by the rat-race of man,
rest content in the fragrance of you.
