[ The Empty Seat :: 2002-02-15 ]

The crowded bus plods slowly onward
its set daily route never changing
Some passengers sit, and others, they stand
some make conversation engaging

Some people climb on and others hop off
at their same daily stops on the way
One seat somehow remaining empty
as if jinxed by some bad luck today

It receives but a glance from those boarding
who then stand at the opposite side
Though when someone stands up when their stop comes
then right into that seat someone slides

The crowded bus plods ever onward
continues its slow daily grind
that empty seat always the oddball
as if all of the riders are blind

The next stop is mine, so I get off
leaving empty seats now numbering two
Like some U.S. states back in the 50's
only its Japan and its 2002
