[ Sidewalk Sneakers :: 2003-05-16 ]

sidewalk sneakers
follow, chase each other
passing, overtaking
endless rhythm

a newspaper
wraps itself around my shin
blown by the wind
a square printed leaf

it threatens rain
a spittle
clouds grey gather
my umbrella at home mocks me

one sneaker passes
the other
and the wind unwraps
the newspaper from my shin

it blows
its blown on down the street
by the wind
that holds back the clouds from raining on me

will the same wind
blow my thoughts to you
betray me
i shouldn't be here

too many memories
in this part of town
I buy the same thing, embarrassed
the same girl takes my change

sidewalk sneakers take me away
carefully avoiding
those streets we walked
at night together

the chainlink fence
by the christmas tree lot
and that dark alley
on the way home from the bar

they're all around here
somewhere
knocking on memory's door
I shouldn't be here

sidewalk sneakers take me away
from where I'd rather be
wishing you were here with me
but I won't fight it, I won't fight you

one shoe follows the other
taking turns
as we leave behind
our memories in this part of town

the rain threatens again
and the wind whips
a paper past
as I walk back on down the street
